  MODERN JEWISH HISTORY: Philosophy, Politics, and the Origins of Jewish Citizenship in Europe Where and when does modern Jewish history begin? There is no single date or address that marks the beginning of modern Jewish history. Rather, modernity is a process that unfolds over time. This class examines the processes of modernity--including the emergence of enlightenment philosophy, liberalism, and mercantilism -- and their impact on individual and communal Jewish life in Germany, France, and Russia.
