La Jolla’s Girard Avenue is home to a wide variety of boutique home décor and furnishing shops, but none are quite like the Symphony Home Décor and Design showroom. Brimming with fabric samples, bedding, pillows, drapery, antiques and even china sets, it’s easy to get lost.
Owner and principal designer Symphony Moussighi opened the store in January, 2013, one year after opening a workroom in Clairemont where she makes all of her designs. She produces limited edition, luxury lines of drapery, bedding, pillows and accent pieces.
She also works with designers and clients to create custom designs in a seemingly endless array of fabrics.
Moussighi studied business management and fashion, but she always found home décor more attractive.
“I am in love with fabrics, they bring more character to your home more than any thing else,” she says.
When clients are trying to pick the best materials, she says: “It is important to consider how you are going to use it. You can create a masterpiece out of simple cotton.”
But it’s the surprising details that catch people’s eyes. Drapes embroidered with flowers, duvets ribbed with tassels, pillows adorned with buttons—each element works together to create a complex, surprising and dazzlingly unique design.
She comes from a family of antique collectors, and it feels like you’re walking into her home when you walk into the showroom.
“When I moved to the U.S. from Switzerland and bought a house here, it had huge windows. I went to buy drapery for my house but I couldn’t find the quality I was looking for. That’s when Symphony Home Décor and Design was born.”
She moved to San Diego with her two children after trying out other American cities like Chicago, New York and San Francisco. But it was immediately clear that La Jolla was the best fit.
“La Jolla looks like Heaven” she says of her new home. “It’s very family oriented, I really believe it is the best place to raise kids and give them the opportunity to become better human beings.”
Although she has a storefront, Moussighi isn’t producing her designs en masse. At most, she will do a run of 10 of any one design, but she usually stays between three and four, sometimes creating only one. This keeps the pieces unique and gives her the opportunity to continue bringing new ideas to life.
All of her pieces are made locally by hand in her workroom. She employs a rotating staff based on the season, sometimes with as many as 10 people measuring and sewing, but not cutting. She still does that herself because she hasn’t yet found anyone whose cutting is up to par.
“I am a perfectionist. I don’t want to have something ordinary.”
When she isn’t perfecting her designs, she likes to read, watch classic movies, paint watercolors and play with kids.
