Seniors can hitch a free ride to services through On the Go

Jewish Family Service’s On the Go program will offer seniors free rides to High Holy Days services throughout the county.

No one over the age of 60 should miss High Holy Day services if they don’t have transportation, which is why JFS and On the Go have teamed up again this year to offer those community members a free ride to and from services in most instances.

Advanced registration is required, and seniors must live within the service area and go to a participating synagogue to receive a ride from volunteer drivers.

Participating synagogues include: Congregation Beth Am, Congregation Beth El, Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation Dor Hadash, Ner Tamid Synagogue, Temple Adat Shalom, Ohr Shalom Synagogue, Temple Emanu-El, Temple Solel and Tifereth Israel Synagogue.

In addition to High Holy Day services transportation, On the Go keeps seniors moving with volunteer drivers who provide individual transportation to doctor appointments and other errands, shuttles for group transportation and organized excursions throughout San Diego and the surrounding areas.

For more information, go to www.jfssd.org/onthego or call (877) 634-6537.

Kever Avot V’imahot Observances

The San Diego Rabbinical Association has organized Kever Avot V’imahot observances this year, ensuring that both a rabbi and cantor are available to chant memorial prayers and say kaddish.

Kever Avot V’imahot, the practice of visiting the graves of loved ones during the High Holy Days observance, is practiced across Jewish denominations.

The tradition to visit the graves of loved ones on the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is no specific to any one Jewish denomination, although it is still not a very widely practiced tradition. It’s a way to honor the past before forging ahead, refreshed after the holiest days of the year, and can be practiced at any cemetery, whether a loved one is buried there or not.

This year’s memorial services will be Sunday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m. They will take place at both Home of Peace Cemetery, 3668 Imperial Ave., San Diego, CA 92113, and Greenwood Memorial Park and Mortuary, 4300 Imperial Ave.

Grandfather/grandson team to conduct services this month

Rabbi Hillel Silverman of B’nai Shalom in Vista will join his grandson, Cantor Matthew Rutta, on the bima this month to conduct the synagogue’s High Holy Days services. To add another generational element to the special services, Rabbi Silverman will use a Machzor prayer book edited by his well-known father, Rabbi Morris Silverman.

Rabbi Silverman has received numerous awards and honors, including the Prime Minister’s Israel Medal of Honor for his distinguished service to Israel and the Jewish people, presented by Prime Minister Menachem Begin. His grandson, Matthew Rutta, is a graduate of the Joint Program of Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and is a fifth-year rabbinical student at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University. He is also receiving a master’s degree in education from the American Jewish University. Cantor Rutta has officiated for four years at synagogues in Los Angeles.
Services will take place at the Carlsbad by the Sea Hotel, (formerly the Holiday Inn) at the Windmill Landmark, 850 Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad. For more information or for reservations call  (760) 806-4766.
