High Tech Teeth

With his personalized approach to dentistry, Dr. Sidney Spector has earned his status as one of the top periodontists in San Diego. Since 1979, clients at his Scripps Ranch-area office have come to appreciate the warm, knowledgeable environment he and his staff provide.

“We find that patients who are relaxed and understand their treatment and are willing to participate in their own care have much better short- and long-term interactions with whatever type of treatment they undergo,” Spector says.

Although Spector, who completed his dental training at Indiana University, specializes in periodontics and dental implants, he also does extensive bone and tissue grafting. Though many of his patients, he says, take advantage of his services for cosmetic reasons, many are aware of the association of gum disease with other health problems.

“An increasingly large number of patients who come into the practice for implant treatment or cosmetic periodontal surgery or treatment for periodontal disease are coming on their own because of the association of inflammation of gum disease with other aspects of a person’s health, including heart disease and pre-term low-weight babies,” he says.

But regardless of their reason for arriving in Dr. Spector’s office, all of his patients can expect the same high-quality care.

“Everyone has a thorough exam, and then we discuss the findings with a patient’s referring dentist and form a plan of treatment based on their periodontal and general dentistry needs,” he says.

Dr. Spector says he prides himself on his sound scientific approach to treatment, even with something as cosmetic as dental implants. Using the latest technology available, he is sometimes able to save teeth that, under less advanced care, might have been replaced by an implant.

“It’s interesting being in San Diego, where so much biological research is being done,” Dr. Spector says, “because patients have a greater understanding of treatment techniques.”

Scientific advances have allowed him to stimulate a patient’s own bone or tissue growth rather than resorting to donor tissue or prosthetics.

“The most artistic aspect of periodontal treatment that we utilize is tissue grafting to get patients’ smiles back,” he says. “It’s an exciting aspect of periodontal treatment and comprises one of the more demanding aspects in my particular specialty.”

And in a city where biology is a top industry and the community is more knowledgeable of technology, Dr. Spector’s patients often have high expectations.

“[It is both] challenging and more interesting as a doctor to be treating patients who appreciate a high-tech approach to their situation,” Dr. Spector says.

In addition to treating patients, Dr. Spector wears a number of other hats. He has served as an examiner for the Dental Board of California, supervising those applying for permits to use intravenous sedation techniques. He holds a seat on the California Society of Periodontists and the San Diego County Dental Society as well as on the advisory board for Summit Dental Group and the California Dental Association board of advisors.

With a practice that has been oriented toward the most advanced, individual care for all patients since the beginning, Dr. Spector and his team of friendly staff make a visit to his office a relaxed and comfortable experience.
