President and Founder of J Street Visits San Diegoby Sharon Rosen Leib November 13, 2017
Jeremy Ben-Ami, Founder and President of J Street – an organization that lobbies Congress and the Administration to promote pro-Israel, pro-peace policies – briefed supporters at UCSD’s Faculty Club on Nov. 7. As J Street approaches its 10th Anniversary, Ben-Ami set forth an ambitious 2018 agenda for the advocacy group.
J Street’s priority in 2018 is to support candidates with a “diplomacy first” approach to Middle Eastern conflicts. J Street’s political action committee is currently raising money to fund candidates committed to defusing the high levels of tension in the Middle East. Along those lines, J Street will continue defending the Iran nuclear agreement against any Administration efforts to abolish it.
Another top priority will be preserving the possibility of a two-state solution. J Street believes that Israel’s Jewish and democratic character depends on the creation of a Palestinian state that will coexist with Israel in peace and security.
“We need to continue expanding to get our message out. We are staking out the 50-yard line in the American Jewish community by reaching out to the pro-Israel, pro-peace middle,” Ben-Ami said.
Finally, J Street is adding issues to its agenda in light of the current political situation in the United States. “We perceive threats to democratic values in our own country and will be advocating for race, religious and gender equality. We also will advocate for immigrant rights and push for passage of the Dream Act,” Ben-Ami said. He’s optimistic J Street will enter its second decade well positioned to address new political challenges both at home and in the Middle East.
