Shmaltz Brewing Company Celebrates 50th Anniversary of “Star Trek”by Caline Chitayat July 19, 2016
In honor of “Star Trek’s” 50th anniversary this summer and fall, Shmaltz Brewing Company has sought to capture the tv show’s indelible spirit in beer. The New York-based brewery will be in San Diego this weekend to debut its Star Trek Anniversary Ale: The Trouble with Tribbles at Comic-Con, the largest pop culture festival in the United States.
The Shmaltz crew will be set up at the premiere of “Star Trek Beyond” on July 20 at the Embarcadero Marina Park, as well as at Comic-Con at the San Diego Convention Center during the actual Comic Con event July 21-24.
“Light Carastan malt gives some residual sweetness in the form of very light toffee,” said Shmaltz Lead Brewer Drew Schmidt in a press release. “A dose of Munich adds a slight bready quality, and wheat malt lends to a slight crisp character. Mashing at a moderate temperature gives this beer a medium body. In keeping with the intergalactic theme, hopping is comprised of Comet, Polaris, Aurora and Admiral (Kirk) hops. This beer is only loosely filtered to clarity, in order to preserve the ambiguity of good and evil.”
The beer will also be available at a number of locations throughout the San Diego metro area, including Tipsy Crow in the Gaslamp, Balboa Tap House in Clairemont, and Ugly Dog Pub on El Cajon Blvd.
