On Monday, August 21, 2017, The Great American Eclipse will occur in San Diego. We’ll be hosting multiple events at the Fleet Science Center that morning and would love to have you come join us! We’ll also be hosting a number of different run up events and have our resident astronomer, Dr. Lisa Will, available for interview in the days and weeks leading up to the actual event as well.
The eclipse will be visible from 9:07 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. on August 21. It will reach its maximum point of eclipse in San Diego at 10:23 a.m. Totality will be visible from other parts of the country, but in San Diego we will only see a partial eclipse. We won’t see another solar eclipse until 2023, so don’t miss this one!
Let’s get dusty! We will depart at 9:20 am sharp via carpool to our hike & return in time for religious school pick up at 11:15am. Please RSVP by Feb. 8.
The Lawrence Family JCC will screen the short documentary, Vaden Versus, followed by a motivational program including a question and answer session with “The Ultimate” Vaden, himself.
Vaden’s story goes from triumph to tragedy back to triumph again. In a 1999 title fight, the world champion boxer knocked out Stephan Johnson. While Vaden knew his opponent was hurt, he had no idea he would die 15 days later. Wracked with guilt, the San Diego native was forced to deal with the consequences of his victory. Admits Vaden, “I’ve been in very dark places, almost forgetting how to live. But,” he continues, “I got back in the ring, worked through fear and guilt and learned how to breathe again.”
YWCA of San Diego County will present the 10th annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®” fundraising walk. Men, alongside women and children, are invited to walk a mile in heels through downtown San Diego County to increase awareness of domestic violence in the community and help end the pervasive issue once and for all.
In need of a good sweat? Wear comfortable clothes & bring a yoga mat. Rabbi Solomon will guide us in some sweaty bliss in honor of Rosh Chodesh Kislev. No prior yoga experience needed. With live awesome drums by Leanne Pearl. Please RSVP by Nov. 16.
On November 23rd, 2017 join 7,500+ participants and spectators in Balboa Park for the 16th Annual Thanksgiving Day 5K, presented by AimLoan.com! The turkey trot begins at 7:30am! San Diego has the country’s 4th largest homeless population, and also is tied for the lowest vacancy rates in the country. The result is that too many of our neighbors are being pushed to life on the streets. This lifestyle does not allow our neighbors to meet their full potential. Thanksgiving Day 5K is not only the most fun turkey trot in town, it also generates awareness and funds to help support Father Joe’s Villages’ efforts to provide and serve close to 1 Million Meals each year!
