Women of the Wall
Nov 16 all-day

Join us for a special opportunity to hear Cheryl Temkin, an Executive Member of the Speakers Bureau for Jerusalem-based Women of the Wall. Ms. Temkin will join us for Shir Chadash and will speak following Shabbat Dinner.

Women of the Wall, (Neshot HaKotel נשות הכותל in Hebrew) is a group of Jewish women from Israel, and around the world, who strive to achieve the right to wear prayer shawls, pray and read from the Torah collectively, and out loud, at the Western Wall (Kotel) in Jerusalem, Israel. The Western Wall is Judaism’s most sacred holy site and the principal symbol of Jewish peoplehood and sovereignty, and Women of the Wall works to make it a holy site where women can pray freely. Women of the Wall is comprised of women from all denominations of Judaism – Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, Masorti, Renewal and Reconstructionist.

Women of the Wall not only seeks empowerment in group prayer and Torah reading at our most sacred site, but also strives for recognition of our prayer service by the legal and religious Israeli authorities, for the sake of all Jewish women. Our group, with a membership that is not only multi-denominational but spans the political spectrum, embodies a message of tolerance and pluralism. Visit the website for Women of the Wall to learn more.

Beth Accomando: Breaking the Commandments: Pre-Code Hollywood
Jan 17 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
For a few brief years at the end of the silent era and early years of the talkies, Hollywood reveled in breaking the rules. Pre-Code Hollywood refers to an era from the arrival of sound in 1927 to the mandatory enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code in July 1934. This era is notable because while there was a Production Code on record, many Hollywood films turned a blind eye to its dictates and served up some of the most delightfully scandalous comedies and darkly sensational dramas.

Contemporary audiences are sometimes surprised by how openly suggestive and fun many of these Pre-Code films are. Join me on a journey through some of these films and learn about the Pre-Code Hollywood film series presented in 2019 at Digital Gym Cinema.

Beth Israel Men’s Club: Art of the Holocaust – Capturing Beauty, Brutality, Hope
Feb 20 @ 6:30 pm

A unique lecture on a topic that is not commonly discussed in the context of the Holocaust – the art of the holocaust.
Art is a powerful representation of the horrors, the hope, the anger and the hopelessness experienced by Jews during and after the holocaust. Through personal stories of victims, survivors and children artists, he will cover real examples of art created by them. We will observe and discuss how art has created a visual, long-living record of the holocaust experienced. How it has been used as evidence for what really happened, how it helped children cope, imagining a better world and how it became a form of resistance by the artists.
The memorable lecture will bring a powerful and unique perspective.
