Tu B’shevat ( the 15th day of the month of Shevat), the New Year for the trees, dates back to Talmudic times. It was designated as the time of renewal of budding in the trees. It is one of four “New Years” of the Jewish calendar. It is a time to share the yield of the land with the poor. Accordingly, on Tu B’shevat, God decides how bountiful the fruits of the trees will be in the coming year.  For Kabbalists, trees were symbolic as the Tree of Life.

Today, we celebrate Tu B’shevat for the renewal of our commitment to serve and protect the trees and all of God’s creations. (Source: Haggadah from Sisterhood of Temple Bat Yahm)
