For a high-end salon experience laced with Hollywood glamour, you don’t have to travel all the way to Beverly Hills. Indigo Salon and Spa in Hillcrest boasts a full menu of beauty treatments, from facials, manipedis and waxing to massage, acupuncture and hair — and they do it all as well, if not better, than any salon whose address starts with Rodeo and ends with Drive.
The brainchild of owner Randi Hosking and her business partner and friend of more than 30 years Phyllis Strauss, Indigo was already an existing salon when they bought the business and location two years ago. Next came a complete gut and redesign of the space and a reimagining of the concept.
“We wanted a very comfortable atmosphere while still being a high-end salon,” Hosking says of what she set out to do with Indigo. “We have a lot of seasoned hairdressers with a lot of salon chair experience, as well as stylists who are really up to date on the new and cutting edge [techniques], so we are kind of your classic salon with a certain flair.”
Seven days a week, clients can receive acupuncture, massages by licensed massage therapists, facials, nail care, sugaring and waxing by some of San Diego’s top estheticians, and, of course, hair cuts, color and extensions by seasoned professionals, including Hosking herself, who has years of experience working in salons as a professional hairdresser.
“Most of the staff does print work and [participates in] fashion shows,” Hosking says. “A large number of local celebrity clients come to us as well.”
Extended hours during the week (the salon is open until 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays) make showing up for an appointment easy even after a long workday, and a small rear parking lot is priceless in a neighborhood where it’s often impossible to find parking. It was all part of Hosking and Strauss’s plan when they set out to create an urban oasis.
“[The salon] is inviting, relaxing and not at all pretentious, which is what sets us apart,” Hosking says.
Additionally, Hosking and Strauss do what they can to help the local community.
“We are two Jewish women in business together,” Strauss says, “and we both come from very active Jewish families.
“We’ve been friends for many years, our parents were friends for many years, and they as well as us have been very active in the San Diego Jewish community. We donate haircuts and give gift baskets to the Jewish Federation and Jewish Family Service, and every year we donate and do what we can to help almost every Jewish organization in town.”
With all their offerings under one roof and such a commitment to service both at the salon and in the community, it’s no wonder Indigo’s appointment books are constantly filling up. In the heart of the city, Indigo truly is a respite from the daily grind.
